Kupu was a collaborative UX/UI project focused on redesigning the Kupu app to improve long-term user retention and encourage consistent engagement. Through research, ideation, and interface redesign, our team explored ways to create a more engaging and meaningful user experience that motivates users to return to the app regularly.

Year
2025
Brief:
How do we encourage regular usage of the app and reinvigorate connection to our communities in a compelling and inspiring way
Solution:
The solution to encouraging retention was gamifying the app where users can put their new vocabulary to the test and this will help with knowing how to use the words correctly
Cultural Research:
For the navigation bar icons, the goal was to create a visual style that felt modern while remaining grounded in Māori culture and identity. Research was conducted into traditional Māori patterns and symbolism to understand how these visual elements could be translated into a digital interface. Multiple concepts were explored, focusing on patterns that connected closely with the purpose and values of the project. The final icon set combined cultural inspiration with a clean and functional design system, creating a stronger visual connection to the app’s roots. This culturally informed approach became a key feature of the project and strongly resonated with the client
